Vicar of the Cosmos is an enemy in The Old Hunters DLC.

Vicar of the Cosmos

An incredibly powerful enemy, matched only by the Red-Eyed Hunters in the Hunter's Nightmare.

There are a total of three, one defends the burning cleric beast (Laurence) and the other two are stationed in front of the Ludwig boss battle.
They come in two variations: Armed with an axe and armed with a giant Church Cannon

-Axe-wielder: Despite their heavy appearance they are fast and unpredictable enemies. Once their health reaches 50% they will summon an arcane shockwave and their attacks will then be accompanied by small arcane pulses, increasing their range and damage.

They are also capable of sprouting giant tentacles from their "head" to grab you with. This attack also deals arcane dmg and has excellent tracking.

-Cannon-wielder: More predictable than the axe-wielder and has no access to magical attacks. His Church Cannon does not have the range of the cannon used by the Undead Giants but is still very deadly. When you get close to him he can swipe at you with his cannon.

  • The first vicar you encounter can take heavy damage from the 2 Huntsmen in front of the cathedral, if you let the fight continue. You can also try summoning the bell ringing woman as she attracts the vicar allowing you to sneak past.
  • The vicars near Ludwig are best engaged from the Nightmare Church as you can then sneak up on the cannon-vicar and take him out first.
  • Great results can be gained from attacking their rear with a charged attack.

Two before Ludwig (one with cannon) HP Echoes (Quantity/Rating) Drop% (Quantity/Rating) Drop%

  • The official name of this enemy is "Nightmare Executioner ".

Tbh, "Vicar of the Cosmos" sounds like a way better & more Yharnam-authentic name than "Nightmare Executioner".

You can backstab them back to back to back (to back to back etc.) if you sneak up behind them from the Nightmare Church bonfire. Run past the two and get the lamp, then head back out and start visceralling. Makes farming for echoes, vials, and bullets a breeze, especially with runes.

If these are "much larger inhumans beasts" Church anticipated to fight than I im no surprised why they came with such ridiculous weapon designs.

When they lose enough health, they... get a lingering AoE on each of their normal attacks. Cool, thanks Miyazaki

Since they have the same moveset as the executioner dudes, I've found them easy to parry. Keep this in mind when you face one and you should be fine.

A good method I've found in the instance of close combat is keeping your distance to bait either their running horizontal swing or their vertical lunging strike, then dodge in and slightly to their left. I usually stick to the non-transformed Holy Moonlight Sword and give them two quick R2 attacks, which even staggers them slightly, but I'm sure other strength weapons should be just as effective, if not better. Dodge directly away from any other series of attacks they might use, including the tentacle grab attack, since the windup grants them significant armor and it has freakishly accurate tracking.

It should be mentioned that their arcane buff adds a lingering hitbox to each swing of their axe, which makes dodging inward considerably less advantageous, though I've found that interrupting their buff animation (when they raise the axe to their face, roar, then slam the pommel into the ground creating a massive purple corona) with the Accursed Brew, their buff will fail entirely, and the fight will continue as before. I'm not sure what other Hunter's tools might help, but I imagine the Executioner's Gloves, the Augur of Ebrietas, A Call Beyond, or even just a good old-fashioned cannon ball will distract them, but some of these attacks might not be fast enough, or they may not provide a safe distance from their arcane shockwave. Cancelling this animation usually triggers their charging attack, so be on your toes.

When you reach the pool of blood guarded by the church cannon variant, just run as fast as you can after dropping down from the elevated walkway to the right side, and get behind the gazebo-like statue where it won't see you. Try to also stay out of sight of the axe variant that will emerge at the other side of the pool, and if you succeed, proceed slowly around the cannon variant after he stops moving. If you haven't activated the Nightmare Church lamp yet, ignore the Executioners entirely and continue stealthing toward the Nightmare Church. When all's ready, return to the Executioners for some sweet, back-stabbing visceral bloodbaths.

The Executioner at the top of the Healing Church steps can be easily circumvented, if one uses the two huntsmen as a distraction and dodges through its attacks, gaining access to the Cathedral. If you climb the steps, the Executioner will position itself just outside the door, facing the city, which leaves this one open for visceral attacks as well. Or you can just ignore it if you're in the middle of taking on Laurence... Your call.

They can be stun locked with visceral attacks. Sneak up behind one, Charge attack, Visceral. repeat till dead.

                    Trivia?05 Jul 2016 14:47

What kind of trivia is that? I don't know about God of War 3 but he looks nothing like Bed of Bullsh*t or The Old One.

Has anyone noticed that these guys appear to be wearing the garb of Logarius' Executioners? They've even got the hood, which is (of course) over their head, and the Holy Shawl looks about the same, too. I know that the Executioner's Set is the progenitor of all Healing Church apparel, but still, it's exactly the same set...
