Messengers are special NPCs in Bloodborne that appear throughout the world to carry items and information back and forth.
You may obtain special messenger skins by preordering the game or obtaining a collector's edition. Several messenger skins can also be found throughout the game world.
"These small creatures have crept out of a nightmare, and while they may not look too friendly, they accompany hunters, follow their orders, and take care of messages left for others."
Bath Messengers
There are 2 Bath Messenger fountains in the Hunter's Dream, one above and one below. Lower Bath Messengers are to the left of the Plain Doll. Upper bath messengers ( Insight Bath Messenger) only appear when you have 1 Insight, and are outside an alcove next to where Gherman first talked to you by the workshop.
- In the lower bath fountain you may "Acquire Items", "Sell Items", or "Leave". You will see more messengers when you have more Badges
- The price of some items will increase as you progress the Moon Phases and further even higher on NG+
- The upper fountain can be reached by a side path or from inside the house. Items bought in this fountain are paid for with Insight.
- 1 or more insight is needed to make the messengers appear in the upper fountain, this applies every time you need their service.
- The upper fountain also sells clothing from defeated bosses and key NPCs; eg - Djura's, if killed, and Gascoigne's set.

Notes & Trivia
- Some creatures you encounter have messengers imbedded in them, for example Mother Brain, the Winter Lanterns and the Crawlers.

I found some trivia that isn't mentioned. The torch/lantern holders in the aqueducts are in the shape of Messengers, meaning that the people who built Yharnam knew about them and liked them so much, they modeled their light fixtures after them.

If they ever make a Bloodborne 2, I want smoking pipes for my messengers.

what funky little dudes! i love them! love makin them wear hats!

Why doesn't this list them as "sea urchins" as they're listed as this in the games files.

I can't tell if I'm stating the obvious or if this is genuinely something no one else has cared to mention, but don't the Messengers look distinctly Pthumerian? They look like mini-Watchers, though instead of worshiping the Great Ones, they worship the Hunters. That, and their eyes are white--at least on the variants that HAVE eyes...

They need to update the information. nothing from the dlc is on the page

In the beginning of the game, after you make a contract and have a blood transfusion, you have a nightmare about a beast arising from the blood, the beast approaches and as it reaches out to you in a gesture of wanting you to accept it, it bursts into flames upon touching you. I’m guessing this is a metaphor for you’re immune to the rampant beasthood curse plaguing the town and it’s for this very reason the messagers came for you. They see your immunity as a sign that you’re some sort of super hunter and so brand you with the mark of the hunter. Hence why the doll says soon after, “Ah, you found yourself a hunter.” In consequence, you’re robbed of your memories and somehow infused with fighting skills...or maybe you always had them? Clearly you’ve been indentured into the dream hunters by the messagers.
It’s really all a hypothesis but it’s how I make sense of it.
Guys, keep this alive:
Easy Layer 1 Chalice Dungeon Messenger Bath

The Bath is in the 1st level's predungeon area with only 1 weak enemy nearby.

I feel like this page should mention something about the Messengers in Chalice Dungeons that for some reason think it's okay to teleport you INTO harm's way. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and pretend they're just trying to help me gain blood echoes, but LET ME TRAVEL AT MY OWN PACE GOD DAMN!

I have some trivia to point out!
After spending time in the Hunter's Dream with headphones on, I noticed strange crying. After investigating, I noticed that it was coming from the bloodstains/hunter tombstones that were lying everywhere from suiciders. After looking closer at the tombstones, I noticed that the Messengers were the ones sobbing. So all that time I've been hearing random sobbing in dungeons and stuff, thinking it was just ambient noise, it was actually the Messengers mourning over the deaths of other Hunters.
I thought this was extremely cool and sad at the same time, From really outdid themselves with the details this time!
Just some insight I wanted to share: The Brain of Mensis and heads of Winter lanterns show messengers acting just like Leukocytes (white blood cells) gathering round and engulfing "invaders" or foreign bodies in the nightmare. This correlates nicely with with the opening cinematic where the beast (representing the scourge, carried by erythrocytes) cannot touch the player and the messengers gather round to protect us. I feel this also supports the theory that the player hunter is anaemic (paleblood)

The messengers, when viewing the death spectre, can be heard sobbing. It's as though they are mourning the death of their hunter.

Does anyone else think that the messengers are the soul remains of the bastards of Loran. They look kind of like the bastard of Loran item, and they are often thought of as babies.

I added this but it got deleted you unlock Blod shards when you beat Blood starved Beast in the Old town. I was farming the stones before hand to level up and then when I beat the BSB I suddenly had the stones in shop
The Tomb Prospector set opened for me as soon as I killed the Blood Spattered Beast if memory serves.

Can anyone confirm that it's the badges gained that increases the # of messengers in the bottom bath? I suspect it's so, but not sure if it's that or as you beat certain bosses.

The messengers seem to be inspired by Berserk as are many aspects of the game as shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_E1ZbJlB8E This video discusses the messenger at around 6:50 in the video but I recommend starting at 6:08 for the full discussion on Berserk should you wish to watch this.
