Lamps in Bloodborne are checkpoints that allow for the Hunter to respawn there upon death. Similar to bonfires in Dark Souls, and Archstones in Demon's Souls, the player may activate a lamp to be able to travel to it from the Headstone of Awakening within the Hunter's Dream.
- "This lamp now transports you back to the Hunter's Dream. Upon death, you will awaken at this lamp."
- A Bold Hunter's Mark can transport you back to the last lamp you used.
- The Hunter's Mark can transport you back to the last lamp you used an unlimited amount of times, at the cost of your Blood Echoes.
- The number of Messengers that show up around Lamps represent the amount of players who are in the area at any given time.

Dunno if this happens in Isz Chalice dungeons only but if you turn the camera so that it shows lamp in frontview, you can see some kind of smoke which resembles cosmic effect akin to kin type of spells (Living Failures' meteor attack, Miniature star spell and so on), which might hint at the Hunters being influenced by a Great One (in this case, the Moon Presense).

I've noticed that some lamps have way more Messengers surrounding them, not including my own. Is it possible these signify how heavily populated the area is by other Hunters? (Players)
Do we have anything explaining how they work and how they were created for example? It really bothers me that such details just seem to be omitted on such an important object within the game.
