Chalice dungeons are optional dungeons located in the hunter's dream to the left of your initial spawn point. You'll be able to make one and join friends on the same floor once the boss in old yarnham is killed (could be wrong) as long as you have the materials for ritual along with the correct chalice. Chalice dungeons exceed difficulties by adding hidden walls into there levels. Pthumeru Root Chalice 2nd floor has a hidden wall on a top platform containing 2 wandering madness with different bloodgem types. I've faught a hunter and obtained a right hand weapon called the Beast Claw in a chalice dungeon. I've also found upgrades of the same weapon (the saw blade) multiple times in different spots. Most stray paths behind gold doors in the dungeons lead to rare items of the game so exploring is a must.
