Bloodletter (Japanese: 瀉血の槌 Phlebotomy Hammer) is a Trick Weapon in Bloodborne. It is wielded by Brador and is part of The Old Hunters DLC. There are 3 versions of this weapon: Normal, Uncanny and Lost. The only known differences being the Gem Imprints and the locations in which they are found.

Bloodletter Description

"The demented hunter weapon brandished by Brador, the Healing Church assassin.
The Bloodletter assumes its true and terrifying form after it draws upon blood from the inner reaches of one's body and soul.
This is the only effective means of expelling tainted blood, or so Brador, isolated in his cell, continued to believe."

Bloodletter Information

  • Transforms from a short one-handed mace to a large two-handed bloody morning star at a price of its user's health.
  • Similar to the Chikage, this weapon's damage and scaling changes to bloodtinge when transformed.

Location

Normal

  • Obtain the underground cell inner chamber key.
  • Return to the underground prison (from the underground corpse pile lamp, go up the stairs and turn left) and open the door to Brador's cell. His cell is the second on the left behind a flight of downward stairs. Kill Brador to obtain the bloodletter.
  • Brador will not be hostile in his cell, but will invade the player right outside his cell.

Uncanny Bloodletter

  • If you have the normal version: Create Glyph 8i29rqz3 (Pthumeru Labyrinth) and buy from Bath Messengers up a ladder from the main room for 80,000 Blood Echoes

Lost Bloodletter

  • If you have the normal version: Create Glyph 8i29rqz3 (Pthumeru Labyrinth) and buy from Bath Messengers up a ladder from the main room for 80,000 Blood Echoes

Player Notes

  • Transformed R1 combo consists of two horizontal swipes followed with slam attacks.
  • Similar to the Chikage, the Bloodletter consumes the wielder's blood to achieve its true form. Whereas the Chikage drains health over time as long as the transformed mode is active, the Bloodletter takes a large chunk of health (20%) on transformation with no health drain afterwards.

  • Using the transformation attack also consumes health, though if it hits an enemy the hunter can regain most of the lost health.
  • Much like the Chikage, the weapon's damage switches from Physical to Blood upon transformation, and the damage scaling changes to bloodtinge.
  • Pressing L2 while transformed causes the hunter to perform a slam attack but at the cost of inflicting frenzy buildup on themselves.
    • The frenzy effect produced this way costs 50% of the wielder's health, rather than the standard ~70%.
    • Will not trigger frenzy if the hunter has a frenzy resistance of 180 or higher.
    • It is recommended to obtain the Cosmic Eye Watcher Badge from Upper Cathedral Ward, as this item will unlock Sedatives for purchase from the Bath Messengers in the Hunter's Dream.
    • Equipping Deep Sea runes and having low Insight can also increase frenzy resistance.
  • Charged R2 attack while transformed creates a small blood explosion at the tip.
  • Attacks in transformed mode knock down any enemy that can be knocked down by firearms, such as dogs and spiders.
  • The transformed roll attack is an especially useful thrust with stunning power.
  • Augur of Ebrietas can be used to parry enemies while using the transformed mode.
  • Has unique death animation during transformation if one's health is too low.

R1 Combo 1.00x, 1.00x, 1.00x, 1.10x ??

This combo begins with an overhand slash, followed by a backhand horizontal sweep from left to right, back to an overhand downwards slash, a straight thrust, an overhand downwards slash, and a backhand horizontal sweep from left to right. The second hit has significantly less range than the first sometimes resulting in a complete miss.

Backstep R1 .95x   Performs a backhanded horizontal sweep attack from left to right.
Dodge R1 .95x ?? ~ ?? After the roll, performs a downward overhead swipe.
Dash R1 1.10x ?? (+run) Thrusts the weapon forward and straight out.
R2 Attack 1.50x ?? Thrusts the weapon forward and straight out.
Charged R2 1.90x ?? Performs a broad overhead sweep from right to left.
Backstep R2 1.40x   Brings the weapon down in an overhead ground slam.
Dodge R2 1.50x ?? After the roll, thrusts the weapon straight ahead.
Dash R2 1.50x ?? Performs an overhead ground slam, similar to the backstep R2.
Leap 1.40x ?? (+run) Performs a leaping overhead ground slam.
Transform Attack 1.30x ?? (+x) The user turns 180 and thrusts the weapon through themself, creating the spikeball in the process and hitting anyone behind them.
Transformed Moveset
Move Damage Type & Modifier Stamina Effect
R1 Combo 1.05x, 1.05x, 1.05x, 1.10x, 1.10x ?? This combo becomes with a backhanded slightly diagonal slash/sweep from left to right followed by a sweep from right to left, then a backhanded overhead smash into the ground, and then brought back around overhead for 3 successive ground slams.
Backstep R1 1.00x   Thrust the weapon straight ahead with two hands.
Dodge R1 1.00x ?? ~ ?? After the roll thrusts the weapon straight out with only the right hand holding it.
Dash R1 1.15x ?? (+run) Performs a backhanded sweeping uppercut from left to right.
R2 Attack 1.50x ?? Performs a backhanded hybrid uppercut/thrust from left to right.
Charged R2 2.00x ?? Performs a backhand overhead downward slash/thrust into the ground. Appears to be a horizontal sweep at first but reorients to a downward slash.
Backstep R2 1.40x   Performs a horizontal sweep with a slight uppercut, similar to a homerun swing.
Dodge R2 ?? ?? Performs a hybrid uppercut/thrust similar to the standard R2 attack but with a longer windup.
Dash R2 1.40x ?? (+run) Performs a two handed overhand ground slam.
L2 2.00x ?? Brings the weapon overhead and drives it straight down into the ground producing an AoE effect which adds Frenzy to everything in the immediate area, including the wielder. Performs the same attack for all the different iterations (dash, dodge etc).
Leap 1.40x ?? Performs a leaping overhead backhand slash/slam, from left to right.
Transform Attack 1.20x ?? (+x) Swings the weapon in a wide horizontal sweep from left to right that causes the blood portions of the weapon to dissolve and have a very light AoE move.

I'm trying to get the bloodletter from the glyph and it says that i dont have thr requirements. Can somebody please tell me what do i require?

      • Anonymous

I'm seeing a lot of comments about lack of a circle gem slot. Let me save y'all some headaches. Oos bt gems are wasted on the bl. Use fools gems instead (33% physical attack up at full hp). Or tempering fools dropped by madmen (21% physical / 12% physical at full hp). This is a huge upgrade from the standard 27% tempering, it benefits both forms, WAY easier to farm, benefits transformed L2, and does more DMG than oos bt gems.

Only downsides are they're bad for pvp, and the transform attack loses some oomph.

The Wiki says you can do only 3 overhead slams in its transformed R1 combo, but you can actually keep going indefinitely as long as you have the stamina

          • Anonymous

The stagger on the transformed state is crazy considering how fast it swings. Regular r1s send dogs flying.

Some say that when you pick up this weapon, LowTierGod can be heard whispering in the background to kill yourself NOW!!!

              • Anonymous

I wonder if people forget you can just run past the invading Brador in the cells and kill the real Brador, which will prevent him from invading (the loot you would get from his invasions will be in the place he would spawn for his invasions)

                • Anonymous

I wonder, why does the Lost Bloodletter have a Circle Gem like the Lost Chikage and Lost Bowblade? All three of them have their tricked forms scale exclusively with Bloodtinge, after all.

Late note, Bloodletter's transformed L2 has stupidly high rally. Healed up a half of 40 vit healh bar against 1 enemy

Using this in conjunction with beast claw to juice up on beasthood is a great alternative to seeking psychiatric help

Getting this thing as early as possible is utter hell but worth it. At least the frenzy isn't as much of an issue since I used up all my insight summoning Henriett 8000 times.

One thing that I found out just today about the L2 in its transformed state.

During health rally period, if you press L2 and the enemies within your range get hit by it, you get ALL of your health during rally period back! I haven't seen anything about it on any wiki, so I just wanted to point that out.

I love this weapon alot but damn is it hard to get. You have to pretty much beat the entire damn dlc to get it ao good luck to anyone who wants to do an early build with this weapon.

Can someone please confirm if the L2 ACTUALLY inflicts frenzy to ENEMY players, or if it's just yourself, I see alot of people online saying it does and doesn't and the wiki says it does but now I'm confused, don't got a buddy to test it out with either :(

I’ve been using this thing for my current run and I’ve enjoyed every second of it.
I did have a question, though.
Is it considered a serrated weapon?
I swear I’ve been doing extra damage to beasts and the like with its untransformed mode.

                                • Anonymous

This thing is deceptive in so many ways. Good ways. It has a deceptively long range, a deceptively fast speed for what you would expect of its size, and deceptively high damage in part thanks to low blood resist across the board in PvE but also because the weapon itself is very strong with the right amount of bloodtinge. And because of its size, it's pretty good at staggering the more basic enemies in combos as well.

It's just a shame you have to go through nearly all of the DLC to get it.

And people in this comment section think it's just okay or even bad???? This is IMO easily one of the most powerful weapons for pve purposes if you make the stat investment for it and can deal with waiting or rushing to the end of the DLC for it.

                                  • Anonymous

As you probably know by now, most of the enemies in the game have different resistances. Beasts are weak to fire, Kin are weak to bolt, etc. The thing is, while as much fun as using the hunters axe, or beast cutter it, unless I use bolt paper or bolt gems on them, they're practically worthless against Kin enemies like Ebrietas or the Celestial Emissary. But this, this is good. Like the Chikage, this is a physical weapon that transforms into a two handed bloodweapon. It trades off speed and a mere 4 base damage points for a one-and-done health drain for transforming, and LOTS of stagger. Obviously, it does blood damage. Which means that only 1 boss in the entire game has any real resistance to it. And unless you plan on killing a lot of bloodlickers any time soon, not many mobs have resistance either. So if you're debating between this and the Chikage for a blood weapon, it all rides on wether or not you like that weird looking sheathe or if you can handle constant health drain.

                                    • Anonymous

Jesus, this thing is basically a ‘kill yourself’ weapon. Not worth the trouble to get it, not worth using past the one time you try out it’s attacks.
                                      C’mon, Brador. You are dumb.
                                      1/10.

                                      • Anonymous

.... What foul power would even dare craft a weapon of this sort? At least with the chikage, you DON'T have to impale yourself to activate it, but this thing? Stab stab stab... *Shudders* Spooky...

Then there is the part about the AOE attack, and the frenzy it causes. I can only imagine what horror it is you do to yourself, when you use it that causes that? Is it the blood in your body pulsing too much and then spurting out of your eyes, or is it really the damage to your soul...?

                                        • Anonymous

Can we transform this weapon in an elemental version (arcane, fire or bolt) with a gem? Because I wonder if the arcane scaling could be useful in anyway.

                                          • Anonymous

If you go to his cell from the research hall lantern, he invades with his back turned against you. Easy backstab and a follow-up charged r2 should almost deplete his health.

first time i ever saw this weapon was when i invaded someone using this they were a naked bald man and they one shot me

This is one of the best pve weapons as blood defense is low across the board and it feels like 90% of the enemies have the exact same defense to it combined with the fact that it’s move set is great and there’s no HP drain after the initial transformation. After reaching several ng+ cycles the numbers to enemies haven’t changed at all.

                                                • Anonymous

                                                  >Japanese: 瀉血の槌 Phlebotomy Hammer lmao phlebotomy hammer should have been the english name too, that's gotta be the best weapon name

I managed to obtain a triangle 31.5% blood attack up with a durability curse and now this gem controls my play style as I precisely down enemies without hitting them during their death animation or breaking objects lying around the areas during combat. I am under this gems spell, I am this gems slave, this gem is my master.

                                                    • Anonymous

Anyone else think that this weapon is a reference to the Grant from Dark Souls? Every souls gave has to have a massive AoE hammer in it.

                                                      • Anonymous

My favourite weapon. The only thing I dislike is the lack of a version with a circular slot, can this be justified? It has a transformation penalty like the chikage and it has either equal or less damage than it too. I think it was an unnecessary choice as if Str/Blt needed any more disadvantages as an overall build.

                                                        • Anonymous

Does anyone know how it performs on a STR build? Does the transformed mode benefit at all from STR with the right gems?

                                                          • Anonymous

I don't know if anyone pointed this out yet, but in tricked mode if you hit the oiled barrels they explode.

                                                            • Anonymous

I find this weapon to be a bit underwhelming compared to the other DLC weapons. It's not a bad weapon, but it just doesn't stand out too much in its abilities. For example, the transformed version looks like a giant spiked mace, but it has weak stun ability for some reason, seemingly no better than the one handed version. Mid-to-large size enemies barely flinch when you hit them with it. The only exception is the downward slam attacks, but those only start on your third R1 which can be hard to find an opening for. It has a bit of a weird swing arc, one that covers more area on your left than your right. The charged R2 has a bit of AoE at the end of it, but charges slower than almost all other weapons. The L2 is basically a worse version of the Kos Parasite's L2 because it causes frenzy to yourself, meaning to use it you either have to waste a rune slot for increased frenzy resist or you have to limit yourself to certain fashion options with high frenzy resist. The transform attack also causes damage to you. These drawbacks would make sense if it did a lot of damage or something, but the damage is just OK. I will say that I found it to be the best weapon for fighting Ludwig just because the weird angles and such tend to hit him more easily than other weapons. Other than that, it's a pretty average weapon.

                                                              • Anonymous

So, what does the frenzy damage on the transformed l2 scale off? Total AR? BLT? STR? Insight? Or is it a static value?

This thing is one of the biggest reasons why all hunters need to have sedatives on ready at all times, and that's the way it should be.

                                                                      • Anonymous

The bloodletters death animation is haunting, the way it stands up vertical as the hunter dies is almost like a symbol of it's evil. Even if this might be unintentional it still gives off a very dark feel about the weapon and how it corrupts it's user.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Build potential for the bloodletter with 3 27.2% gems if anyone ever wants to know.

Strength 30 (gatling gun/cannon work very well with this weapon) gives 581 AR on the one handed mace, at 50 strength this jumps to 685 with no skill scaling involved. The one handed mace is extremely strong and it will tear single enemies apart which is the ideal use because it has short range but much faster attacks)

Bloodtinge 50 has an AR of 716 in transformed mode (about 745 if anybody ever manages to farm a triangle 31.5 blood gem or wants a comparison to the chikage) I only began this set up after reaching 50 BT so I don't have numbers for lower amounts.

                                                                          Crazy weapon overall.

                                                                          • Anonymous

It's a shame this thing will always be slightly outclassed by the chikage in terms of blood ATK, feels like with its slightly slower nature this should have the slight upperhand in damage.

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Melee blood attack plus explosives is bad lol. Also, transformed, the weapon doesn't get blocked by walls.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Like does it still switch to bloodtinge when transformed if you put say, a lightning gem on it to switch its physical damage? I'm going to start working on a bloodtinge arcane build and didn't want to have too big of a drain on bullets. I was thinking this with an arcane gem (or three) if it still uses bloodtinge transformed, and various arcane hunter tools.
Second question, is there a fast way to run to this fairly early? I don't want to use too much blood stones on other weapons and I'm trying to have this for a large portion of the game

                                                                                          • Anonymous

It would seem that once you befriend patches he replaces the bath messengers in dungeons, and his items don't cost anymore than buying it from the dungeon messengers.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Is actually 20% + 1 HP lost when transforming; and no this isn't from rounding. For anyone who wants to test this for themselves, transform the weapon with an HP value perfectly divisible by 5 and you should see that you've lost 20% + 1 health when you check in the menu.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I am trying to make a bloodletter build, if possible, can someone post a step by step on how to get this weapon quickly from start of new character? Thank you! I'm pretty sure a lot of people want this answer as well!

I didn't wanna be bothered and ran away. Then when I killed Brador and went outside the Testimony was on the ground without reloading the map. All the other attire pieces were at the spawn points for the phantoms. If you want the weapon and attire without engaging the phantoms, do like me.

As a bloodtinge weapon without bullets it rivals the chikage - a deadly choice and not to be trifled with, but ***** is it nice to live without the health drain. I think it's respective penalty of a flat 20% health is actually more fun, especially regarding the badassetry of getting it all bad in a transformation attack. The two-handed R1 combo is surprisingly quick and deliciously satisfying after 3+ hits. I rate 9/8 would bang.
