"One of the trick weapons of the workshop, commonly used in the hunting business.
This saw, effective at drawing the blood of beasts, transforms into a long cleaver that makes use of centrifugal force.
The saw, with its set of blood-letting teeth, has become a symbol of the hunt, and only grows in effectiveness the more grotesquely transformed the beast."

Player Notes
- The Saw Cleaver is one of two choices for a strength weapon when you are first starting off with a new character.
- It's also the only starter weapon that has a waning gem slot for its normal form.
- This weapon is a jack-of-all-trades in terms of combat, and is highly versatile against either single opponents or groups.
- The normal mode (saw form) is useful when dueling a single opponent.
- It utilizes very fast attacks that do not take alot of stamina.
- However, it has a short reach and is difficult to use against groups.
- When transformed, it takes the appearance of an extended cleaver.
- This form has superior range and several attacks that can strike whole groups at once.
- Like the normal form, it's wielded in one hand at all times.
- Keep in mind that this form also suffers a decrease in attack speed when compared to the normal form.
- Furthermore, remember that only the saw form deals extra damage against enemies vulnerable to serrated attacks.
- The follow up R2 after a fully charged R2 can knock some enemies down while the cleaver is extended.
- This trick weapon and the Saw Spear differs mainly by transformed move sets and STR/SKL scaling.
- The Saw Cleaver has superior strength scaling and deals serrated damage in saw form only.
- The Saw Spear has superior skill scaling and also deals serrated damage while in both forms.

- The Saw Cleaver is the Trick Weapon featured on the title screen.
- It was also one of the first weapons to be revealed for this game.
- Overall the mechanisms of this weapon didn't change at all, starting all the way back when Bloodborne was still known as "Project Beast."
- According to the concept art, the Saw Cleaver uses a trigger mechanism to unlock the joint during transformation.
- The design of the Saw Cleaver seems to be inspired by multiple references:
- The transformed cleaver shows a resemblance to LB-66 MOONLIGHT from Armored Core V.
- The Japanese name is written as "nokogiri nata" (ノコギリ鉈) or "nokogiri hatchet". Nokogiri is a traditional Japanese saw that cuts from the pull stroke, as opposed to the more common push stroke.
- In real life, there is a type of cleaver known as a mezzaluna ("half moon") cleaver, known for chopping/mincing up various food products.
- Most of these types of cleavers have handles on both ends.
- However, some use a single handle that stretches across the blade, which was used to chop up herbs usually; the saw cleaver follows this particular model.
- .Henryk uses this weapon when he fights you and Eileen the Crow during her questline, as well as when he is summoned by you when using the Old Hunter Bell.

tbh the saw cleaver is too op for the beginning of bloodborne and only filthy casuals use it the entire game. the threaded cane is where its at and is the only good weapon in this toxic game. ds2 had the best weapon variety ever and honesty this game can't match ds2.

It's so wild to me that one of the most powerful weapon is just handed to you as first weapon
High attack speed, average stun, High base damage to relatively low scaling, with hidden serrated damage that do more damage to 60% of the enemies, and with no resistance to it.
I feel like it being found as one of the three first weapon was a mistake and it was intended to be the saw spear or saif instead.

The chatacter holds this weapon extremely weird in it's transformed state. He holds it all the way at the bottom of the handle, it would be impossible to wield like that and looks strange. He doesn't hold it like that in any promotional material, and the saw spear is held normal so idk why this weapon is like that. Never seen anyone else mention this but once you notice it you can't unsee it.

To everyone who may be wondering why this weapon was bandaged (similar to Ludwig's Holy Blade): this is to prevent blood from flowing onto the handle and making the weapon unwieldy. Either that or some completely over-the-top hunter in the workshop thought it looked really cool.

My go-to beast-killing weapon. I have bunch of the best fire-gems in it, and it kills most beasts (including zombie-werewolves of Yahar'gul and depth 5 scourge beasts) with max 5 hits. I even killed the boss Loran Silverbeast in about 10 seconds, give or take a few. Great weapon.

I feel like the attack descriptions on this wiki need a severe makeover. Instead of writing a paragraph describing each combo, there should really be a simple list of attack types, velocities, ranges, and where the combo loops. Maybe something like this?: TRANSFORMED R1 (ATK Type): Reg, [Reg, Thr...] (Velocity): Diag, [Ver, Thr...] (Range): Med (Brackets indicate which portion of the combo is repeated. Ellipses denote that the combo can be continued.) ...This isn’t describing an actual weapon in the game, but Saw Cleaver’s moveset isn’t complex enough to show what I mean. Some people say it's the best weapon in the game. I think while it (and the Saw Spear, its apples or oranges.) have unmatched DPS, which is why the speedrunners run it obviously, I think it's a bit overrated by some myself.
NOT saying it's bad because obviously it's not, it's crazy good; but some people make it out to be like there's no point to using anything else. It's good but its moveset is pretty straightforward too, which I guess is a big draw for some people but I actually think certain other weapons have an easier time against certain monsters, and it's really an all or nothing weapon in PvP if you can ever get that.
So in other words, the cover art weapon of Bloodborne will take you anywhere with its DPS and ease of use, but when all is said and done it's a pretty simple weapon which can be a bonus or a detriment depending on the person and situation.

I can't speak for myself, but word is that people are feeling like the Saw Cleaver has a hidden damage modifier of some sort, as the weapon especially late game seems to do a lot more damage than its on-paper stats would suggest, with or without gems. Could be something unintentional, or maybe it's just people's imaginations but this is a sentiment I've seen from more than one person.

Is it viable as an end game weapon? Because I want to keep this beauty as a my main for as long as possible.

What many might have missed and don't really know, is the there is a hidden secondary charge attack: R2-R2 hold In other words you can attack once with R2 and then charge the 2nd R2 - giving new charge up animation. What more you can do this: R2-R2hold-R2 this ends in the same flattening knockdown certical strike. Try it! Other than that Dash(left)+R1 is a delayed strike with huge reach a d high damage. Dash-right is different. Try dashing (locked) sideways and attacking it's amazing. Finaly this weapon is great vs many bosses and has a good stun locking capabilities and tracking.

Does anyone els notice something? That the base damage of this this is just 30 lower than that of the Kirkhammer?! Jezus man this thing is a beast.

Having done multiple playthroughs now, I'm fairly convinced this is actually one of the best weapons in the game. Top 3 at least. Before anyone says anything, every weapon is viable yes, I made a whole build centered around the Stake Driver. That said though, you're always gonna have some that are a little better than others and this thing is just perfect. Its moveset is just perfectly designed, from that insanely fast retracted R1 that almost reminds me of DkS Falchion, a solid retracted R2, to wide swinging arcs and vertical chops in extended mode with its charged R2 having a followup that even knocks down. On full Str builds especially this thing just shreds the game up and it just has a move for every situation. I almost think at +10 on a build like this, its damage is maybe too high (not to mention hidden modifiers) for how fast it is. It's one case where C scaling in STR I think is justified. About it's only flaw I guess is maybe some find it "boring", cause its' the "canon" weapon on the cover? I dunno, but easily one of the most effective, no BS weapons in the game.

The saw cleaver has a secondary charged R2 attack in its transformed state in which the player swings it left to right and does a clockwise spin for the follow-up(with the normal charge the character goes counter-clockwise). The secondary charge attack leads with the saw edge,as apposed the normal charge which use the smooth cleaver side,but I do not know if it adds the serration bonus(I don't have the patience to test this for myself,just sharing my observations).The follow-up to this uses the standard cleaver edge and acts much the same as the standard follow-up. You can use it after 1,3,5,ect. R1s, a short R2, use it in an R2, or use it after the original R2 follow-up combo. If someone wants to test for a serration bonus that'd help as I don't know how much it is to begin with. If someone has covered this already then whatever, but I haven't seen anything about it so I thought I would say something. :)
Not sure if it's worth noting, but the transformed R2 charge attack can be done 4 times in a row with a different move each time (it does that right to left swipe, then the slam, then left to right swipe, then another slam)

Uninteresting as it looks, this weapon is actually one of the beastliest in the game, in term of DPS. The damage multipliers are just fantastic. The speed, as it being a light weapon, is remarkable. The stamina consumption per strike is ridiculously low. All these points make it an ideal weapon for R1-spamming in PvE. An extremely powerful weapon against bosses, no doubt it is. Still, there's a new weapon in the upcoming DLC, a one-handed Burial-cleaver sort. I am much intrigued to see how it performs in both PvE and PvP.

Just picked up the Uncanny Cleaver from the listed dungeon last night. Looks like that might be a better option than the starter Cleaver for primarily +Physical damage blood gems because of the Triangle imprint, then?

Kind of a tricky one because it has some seriously big rooms and those fat ass rolling watcher pthumerians guarding more than one level. Keep in mind that the third level is also a sinister bell level.

Not sure if anyone else has posted this here because it isn't in the trivia. But it seems like an obvious reference to a cut-throat razor, only much bigger.
This is one of my favorite weapons in the game.
Someone below had a post that showed the irony of the scaling's abbreviation. It's not really true trivia, but it's too funny and coincidental to not have in the trivia part IMHO.
