Materials

Materials are items in Bloodborne that are used to perform a Chalice Ritual or fortify your weapons at the Workshop. Blood Stone Shards and Blood Gems are the primary upgrade items. These can be found in chests, Chalice Dungeons, on corpses and as mob drops.

Exactly 16 of each kind of Blood Stone plus 1 Blood Rock are required to fully upgrade a single weapon.

      Best way to farm blood stone shards, twin shards, and chunks is the 4 blue-eyed scourge beasts(werewolves) in upper cathedral ward in the first building. I take out the brainsucker in the far left corridor with a saw cleaver with a blood gem in it that converts all damage to fire damage(brain suckers are very weak to fire damage). Also, each of the beasts will drop some piece of loot every kill if you have two eye runes equipped; usually this is blood stone. Can someone confirm?
