Notes

  • Arcane has a softcap at 25 Arcane (i.e. past 25 Arcane, per point investments provide moderately less scaling benefits with Arcane weapons/Tools.)
  • Arcane has a hardcap at 50 Arcane (i.e. past 50 Arcane, per point investments provide severely less scaling benefits with Arcane weapons/Tools.)
  • Increases Item Discovery.
  • Hunter Tools have very good scaling all the way up to 99 Arcane

Correction for the wiki weapons and molotovs hit a hardcap at 50 arcane with very diminishing returns. All other arcane hunter tools, except the tiny tonitrus and a call from beyond, hit a softcap at 50 and have better scaling from 80-99 than 50-80. The 2 other tools hit a softcap at 70. Which is why arcane has overall good scaling up to 99.

arcane scaling will not work with “unnatural” bolt or fire added by blood gems, so if you’re using the tonitrus and add extra arcane scaling and damage, the bolt and arcane will scale more, but if you add fire, it won’t scale since it is not an element naturally on the weapon

I’m debating on whether or not to do a pure Arcane or an Arcane/Skill build. From what I understand, if I cap my build at 150, I could pump levels into my Arcane stat even past 50 and still get a nice AR increase in a maxed out LHB or Kos Parasite. On the other hand, I could go 50 Arcane/50 Skill and use the Burial Blade. Any thoughts?

Arcane is a measure of how sympathetic the old ones are to your character. you get this through the background stories at the beginning of the game and the hunters tools. "old ones are sympathetic." hence why the tragic background gets "help". The hunters tools are familiars in communication with the old ones, or are objects linked to and old one ,that old one pays attention to. When you use an arcane hunter tool or weapon really you are asking an old one to help your character either by directly intervening (A Call Beyond, Augur of Eberitas) or blessing you (Old Bones) There are a few items that scale with arcane but are really powered by remnants of an old ones' interactions with the object.

So I know that this page has been up fora while, but I still see comments as recently as a month old that still seem to be confused about how Arcane scaling works. Playing an arcane/jack-of-all-trades as my main, I felt I would try to compile what I've learned via digging on other sits and here in one place.WEAPON SCALING: Yes, all weapons have arcane scaling, but they only benefit from it if they already have natural elemental damage, like the Burial Blade or the Tonitrus. Otherwise, this indicates how the weapon will scale IF you put an elemental gem in it (which will remove the physical scaling). The Tonitrus, for example, will always scale a bit with Arcane because it naturally has bolt damage. The Threaded Cane, despite having B scaling in arcane, gets no benefit until you put an elemental gem in it. At that point, it does pure elemental damage and it will scale with ONLY Arcane, making other physical stats above the minimum requirement useless.ITEM DISCOVERY: IT increases item discovery up to 50, just like it says on the wiki.DIMINISHING RETURNS: So here is where Arcane gets weird. For scaling on weapon damage, it works just like anything else. You see a soft cap at 25, and a much harder one at 50. The damage from Hunter Tools, however, does not appear to have a soft cap. I'm capping my own level at 150 with 60 arcane, so I can't speak to the upper limits of the stats, but I have read elsewhere that the damage on these tools will continue to scale very well up to Arcane 70 or 80. This will NOT affect the damage on weapons, however. Past 50, they stop benefiting from scaling to any appreciable degree. Taking your arcane past that limit is strictly to boost the damage of your Hunter's Tools.

Is it even possible to have a good beginning in this game by putting points into arcane? I have no idea where to start with this stat...

I've been hearing a lot of people talk about hunter tools (arcane ones) gaining even more damage if you go over 50 Arcane, the new hard cap being 70. Is this true?

How viable is an Arcane focused build? It obviously would do great with something like the flame spitter, but you really don't get the good Arcane Items until later in the game. Anyone tried it yet?

Arcane is knowledge/affinity of the cosmos or generally knowledge in itself. This explains why the burial blade and blades of mercy scale with Arcane (made from siderite) and why most tools scale with it. Empty Phantasm Shell gives off a starry-like buff that looks like the milky-way. The arcane symbol is a star itself. The church and scholars try to draw knowledge and power from space, the powers from above; the heavens.
