I get on paper that making blood vials limited makes sense for lore reasons i.e. Blood is meant to be highly sort after and it makes the player fit in with every other blood addict in this world.

With that being said, in practice, it sucks and I think hurts the game having to farm them more than it benefits it. I think it's further compounded by the fact that lamps require two loading screens to fast travel or to reset enemies. That means you have to sit through at least 4 loading screens each time you want to top them up most of the time.

I think with a limited system like this, they should have fixed the lamps so they have at least some of the basic functionality of the bonfires from the DS games AND there should be other ways to heal out the gate.

I found the game felt right with the Blood Rapture rune and I think visceral attacks should heal by default from the start of the game. It's pushes the player to play more aggressively but it also gives newer players more incentive to get parry timing down.

Running out of blood vials is usually a problem of resource management. If you get blood echoes, always set aside some of them to buy vials, bullets, etc. If you beat a boss, and the first thing you do level up as much as you can afford, you are plaything the game wrong. And if you need blood vials, go back and play through a level and BUY them from the dream with the echoes you earn. Way more fun and faster. Farming blood vial drops is such a waste of time. And for QOL, having 20 heals from the start is way more player friendly than starting DS3 or Elden Ring with only 4 flask charges.

I think the real problem with the system is that blood vials (and bullets as well) only drops from certain types of enemies. Primarily humans (and for bullets firearm and "magic" users). The PROBLEM is that as you progress through the game you encounter fewer and fewer humans so you stop topping yourself off as you progress and instead start cutting into your supply. Bullets have a lesser version of the problem since bullet droppers, while not evenly distributed, are at least not bunched up to ward the start of the game like vial droppers.

All it would take to fix it is to spread vial/bullets droppers evenly through out the game OR give all enemies a chance to drop them. I know the latter would work because that's exactly what Sekiro did with emblems which are functionally the same in usage as "MP'' as quicksilver bullets are.

Or do what Nioh did and combine both a blood vial type system and a estus like system into a single unified healing system.

I used to be on the side of "Vials aren't that bad" but now that I've done an early-ish DLC route I don't agree with myself anymore. There is no reason for vials to be the way they are and not just, like estus. It doesn't add any tangible benefit. You can defend the system as much as you want but in the end there is no point in it not just giving you some vials by default and maybe you can stock up on extras if you are doing good.

You have no problem with vials until you for some reason run into a wall and now they suddenly become this boring additional grind you have to do. There are no benefits to making them limited besides wasting the player's time.

Funny thing, the price is still at 360 for me after beating Vicar Amelia. I'd guess that interacting with the skull right after the fight is what actually triggers the increase to 540. Which makes sense, as that's also what triggers the first night phase.

i dont understand the hate for these, in none of my playthrus have i had to farm for these and this was my 2nd souls game, i think yall just suck tbh, its not that hard to kill enemies thru out the area, get echoes from them, and buy vials, not to mention all the coldbloods u get thru out yharnam, and the enemies that have a guaranteed bullet and basically guaranteed blood vial drop, that are in gascoignes runback.

I honestly don't think I would be so pissed at the blood vial system if load times weren't garbage. If it loaded the area I was in within 2 seconds I would get over it. However, at 5 seconds I get very pissy.

Didn’t know the vial system was such a hot topic lol. If youre running out of vials against a boss you need to take a break.

Not to mention the shortcuts make boss runs non existent in the game other than for cainhurst so it’s not like you burn vials there.

And finally even when vials are more in ng+ you earn echos like crazy on top of having a higher discovery where every other mon drops vials.

New "despicable blood vial" messages appear regularly. But why?

You want a 20-minute showdown with some jerk dressed as a werewolf that rages across the entire level and goes right down to the wire?

Or you wanna get one-shot inside of 5 seconds?

I like how they get more expensive as you progress, as if it wasn't agonizing enough farming the stupid things

                        • Anonymous

My personal favorite route is start at the Great Bridge, kill everything to the two beasts, head back down through the building (grabbing the 4 bullets from the wheelchair enemy) and going around to kill the two trolls. The three trolls on the route usually drop six vials, and the two beasts usually drop six, giving you on average 12 (sometimes less, but the random huntsmen sometimes drop a few as well).

I notice a lot of comments saying that the vial system is terrible. I, for one, completely disagree. As someone who has played through the game 4-5 time and has 100%, I think of myself as pretty knowledgeable. For this reason, I would like to give some tips to those who struggle with the system.

1.Try to avoid damage. I know I know, this is almost a "get good" tip, but to be honest, it's how it is. The less damage you take, the less vials you'll use. I myself am not perfect on this and there have been times I've taken loads of damage from enemies; however, with practice, I've developed my skills. I know that there are quite a few boss fights that you might use all of your vials on. That's alright, I've done that myself. With some of those bosses, it takes time to learn how to perfect dodging for the fight.

2.If you run out of vials, make sure you have a good farming route. Now, I don't mean find one way you can kill a single enemy for 5 vials and then reset. Sure you could do that, but I find that inefficient and boring to do. I'm sure there might be better routes, but I always find myself farming the enemies around Cathedral Ward. I kill pretty much ALL the enemies there, even if some don't have a chance to drop vials. They all drop echoes. This I'll talk about in #3.

3.Don't be afraid to spend some echoes on vials. Often times, when I'm doing the toughest boss fights, I'll run out of vials and need to get some more. In this case, I run and do my farming route (Cathedral Ward)(tbh with my route sometimes I don't net a lot of vials from actual enemies). Doing a long route will not only potential get you a lot of vials, but also a lot of blood echoes. After I complete the farm, I spend ALL of my echoes on vials. This will get you A LOT more vials than the vials that drop from enemies. If you're doing a tough boss and you do your farm and don't buy vials, you might only have enough for 1-2 attempts at said boss. This, I really dislike. I don't like being away from a boss that I'm struggling with. It can mess me up with the work I've put in learning a boss's attack patterns. If you buy vials, you can get in SO many more attempts. With my method of running my farming route and then buying vials, I have been able to buy almost 150 vials (I took a picture when I did this, however, I can't remember if I had anything that boosted my echo gain).

If you couldn't tell, I love this game dearly. I get if you like some of the systems in dark souls better. Just try and give this game a chance and maybe you'll end up loving it too.

Complete utter retarded bullshit. Don't force players to grind for healing or else you put an element that SUCKS BALLS ontoxour otherwisely good game. THIS SYSTEM IS ABSOLUTELY ****ONG DISGUSTING AND BRAINLESS. Make blood vials be like estus in dark souls. The system that bloodborne has is bullshit.

What I hate the most is the constant back and forth you have to do. Farm > go to Hunter's Dream > Return > repeat. Using Hunter's Mark to farm the blood vials from the bloody guy at Ludwig's is a waste.

                                • Anonymous

Honestly, having a guaranteed 10 vials on respawn would be pretty balanced. You could forego farming completely at the cost of rarely having more than half your max vials, so it would be kind of like loot-based kindling

                                  • Anonymous

There's a piss easy farming spot is in the Hunter's Nightmare. The bloody dude on the gate right before Ludwig always drops 5 vials when killed. Kill him, Hunter's Mark out, go back and repeat.

                                    • Anonymous

Don't know why they don't just give you 20 vials when you die. Having to farm for the independently really ruins the immersion and game pacing.

                                      • Anonymous

Worst element in Bloodborne, keeps it from being a perfect game (with a few other small things). Unless you're a very very good player (or a liar), some bosses will take you 5-10 attempts easy. That's a lot of blood vials, which you need to farm (or buy from the Messengers at an increasing price). Complete and utter garbage.

                                        • Anonymous

An easy vial farm can be accessed in the DLC. In the Hunter's Nightmare, the bloody guy banging on the gate near Ludwig's arena drops five vials when killed. Go to the Nightmare Church lamp, kill the guy, use a Bold Hunter's Mark, repeat. If you don't have a Bold Hunter's Mark, just use up all your blood echoes and use the normal Hunter's Mark. I also recommend just punching him to death because he dies quickly and your durability could get burned up if you go too long.

What I hate so much about this game is unlike dark souls 3 I have to get more heals again and again and again without it refilling

                                            • Whenever I level-up, any Echoes I lave left over I put towards Blood Vials at the Messenger Bath whether I need more or not; I prefer to walk around with as few Echoes as possible, generally, to minimize risk of losing them. End-result is I NEVER have to farm Vials.

It would be super fcuking awesome if this actually fcuking worked when I'm about to die with a sliver of health left and absolutely mashing the fcuking button this is tied to. It's not like this game isn't fcuking hard enough already.

So I got to Micolash and notice they I had no vial, no to the dream to get more. I notice how many vials I can have and did a little math and found that to get 620 blood vials (the maximum amount not using communion runes), you need about 446,400 echoes. I really need to find a great place to farm echoes.

                                                  • Anonymous

also you can go down the ladder (beside the bridge big guy and fire rock), easily kill the pig from behind, get some money and qsbullet(certain equipment required) and blood vial X4 (NG+)

                                                    • Anonymous

Since people are posting about health amounts:

Bloodvials heal for 35% hp(maybe40) and blood bullets consume 30%.

So getting bullets is good way of topping up

                                                      • Anonymous

At level 13, with 15 vitality and 682 total health, it healed me for 272 health; I'll try to update the value when I'm at a higher level.

                                                        • Anonymous

I have found this the best way to farm Blood Vials. It's about 8-12 per trip and takes a few minutes. This requires you having the shortcuts unlocked of course. From Tomb of Oedeon lantern, out the door and down the stairs to the two guys facing away from you, who usually drop vials. Out the door the big guy will push the flaming boulder down the stairs and kill all the mobs down there, possibly dropping vials. The big guy and his friend also drop them. At the end of the bridge take the elevator on the right. At the top there's two more big guys and up a few flights up stairs and past one more enemy there's the Central Yharnam lantern to take you back to the Dream. You could also do this trip in reverse.

                                                          • Anonymous

You've probably heard this a lot but this is really bad game design. The Blood Vial system is a huge step back from the Estus Flask system which was integrated to stop this kind of healing abuse from Demon's Souls. Bloodborne limits the number you can use at any time thankfully but the farming is the biggest problem. I kind of understand why this happened as you can't rest at lamps but it is still ridiculous. Perhaps they could have removed the storage system and replenished your vials back to 20 when you touched a new lamp or allowed you to pick up blood vials and convert any you scavenged at your maximum into blood echoes. It's not hard to reach 99 vials. It's the same with quicksilver bullets as well.

                                                            • Anonymous

Why do blood vials replenish to 20 in my inventory when I return to hunters dream but then doesn't keep replenishing after a while?

                                                              • Anonymous

Has anyone done a full run without using one of these? The description makes it sound like maybe we shouldn't actually use these.

                                                                • Anonymous

When I put blood vials in storage or buy more than I can hold, It doesnt go to my storage,it says it did but when I go to pick them up theres no blood vials , or QuickSilver bullets

                                                                  • Anonymous

If you're like me, only using Bullets as a means to Visceral Attack, then this is a potential issue, as having maxed out Vials, also gives you perpetually infinite Bullets. Although you do have to limit yourself to 5 shots using this "strategy", it makes the need for actual Bullets, an almost non-existant problem during gameplay. For this, I suggest a potential solution: Reduce the amount of Blood Bullets recieved per animation, most desireably to 1 per animation. Given that, I understand that in doing this, it increases the need for farming, but enemies that drop them always do so in 3-4 portions, which is why I deem it a solution.

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous
