Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen is a Boss in Bloodborne.

Combat Information

  • All her blood attacks cause rapid poison to build up, so bring Antidotes.
  • Only the end of the second "Cry" of the three, will root you if close in melee range. When you hear the second cry jump back, then come back in for a strike.
  • Usually you can only get 1-2 hits on her, then you have to distance yourself, otherwise you get chained down
  • Sometimes the baby doesn't cry right when you start attacking her. Listen carefully and especially in the first phase you can just spam R1 despite your stamina and interrupt her slowly starting attacks until after a while baby forces you to stop. It is possible to R1 spam the whole first phase if the baby stays silent.
  • The first phase you can just dodge through the blood rain she shoots from her wrist, to get your hits in (don't do that once phase 2 starts, you'll get hit)
  • Phase 2 starts at around 70-75% she will break her handcuffs and will start using her knife in melee (perfect for riposting, makes the fight a whole lot faster)
  • As for riposting, just get close in shortly, backstep and interrupt her from a safer distance, otherwise you'll get chained and can't get your Visceral Attack in.
  • At some point she will disappear and summon clones, just hit/shoot them once, and they will disappear (clones only shoot one blood bullet from distance).
  • At around 50% she will use a new ranged skill, which involves her cutting her wrist and summon blood knives that attack you from the ground, just sidestep the ground knives; there will be 5 fast ones (just sprint around the arena) and a 6th one that will be delayed
  • Poison Knives work great. 4 will be enough to start the slow poison. It's recommended to wait for the more difficult half of the fight (You can't kill her with 20 Poison Knives alone, but having it chip away in the background makes the fight significantly shorter).
  • You can attack her safely with the transformed Threaded Cane without causing the baby to cry. This makes the fight go much faster if you've already invested in upgrading one. Since she flinches on hits in her first phase, you can effectively stunlock her to 70% as well as deal significant amounts of damage to her in her phase 2 when she's simply walking around.
  • Alternately, go for hit and run tactic with Burial Blade dash R1 in its scythe form and immediately steps backward. The weapon's charged R2 attack can also be used to make the fight exceedingly easy, as it can be used to continually knock her down from a considerable distance, which interrupts her attacks.
  • Throwing any type of knife at her places her in some sort of immobile state, and interrupts many of her attacks. This works well in her third stage. You can use this opportunity to heal yourself, land a couple hits, or force her melee attacks to set up a Visceral Attack.
  • Using Holy Moonlight Sword's L2 attack, you can keep knocking her down, essentially avoiding getting hit. Be careful as you can clip her into the center column and be unable to hit her. (Just pushed her into a wall and clipped her through the floor; she died seconds later (half health to instant kill)).

Attack Name Attack Description & Counter
Blood Missile (1 or 3 projectiles) Fast long range shot fired in a series of 1-3. In the beginning of the fight only one missile but later 3 missiles together. The clones always shoot single projectiles, which is a good way of identifying them. Dodge left or right.
Blood Fountain Launches a slow rain of blood from her wrists. In the first stage of the fight can be dodged under the rain by quickstepping right towards her but later rain becomes too heavy.
Blood Blast Heavy close range attack in the first phase of the fight. Lifts her hands up and launches an AoE blast. Dodge straight away from her. Usually one quickstep and some walking is enough so that after the blast, the player can quickstep back to her and attack.
Telekinesis Attack Bows slightly forward and the ground around her starts to glow with a blue light. Act fast! Quickstep away from the glow or run towards the Queen and attack her. The area of the spell has visual borders. If you do not dodge or interrupt the attack, you will get thrown around in the air and slammed to the ground taking a massive amount of damage.
Single Blood Spears from the floor Stabs her hand with her sword causing a blood spear to arise from the floor right under you. She can do one after another, up to 3-4 times. The timing to dodge is as soon as she stabs herself, not earlier.
Walls of Blood Spears Stabs her hand and a line of spears arise from the floor. She can do another as soon as one line finishes, up to 3-4 times. Excellent opportunity to quickstep behind her and do a charge attack to get a backstab chance.
Sword Rush Takes a fast and far reaching jump towards you and slashes with her sword. Easily dodged.
Blood Storm After buffing her sword pushes it to the ground and pillars of blood erupt near her, much like the fire pillars in Fire Storm magic in Dark Souls. Don't try anything, just dodge away from her.
Slashing with her sword Swings her sword (buffed or not) at you and tries to stab too if you get in range. Baiting an melee attack, dodging away and taking a rather easy countershot from the follow ups to stagger her is a solid strategy and visceral attacks makes this fight too much easier.

Notes & Trivia

  • She is the only boss in the game with a gold trophy for defeating her.
  • She drops the Yharnam Stone, but only in Ihyll encounter, as she doesn't drop anything in Mergo's Loft.
  • If you haven't defeated Mergo's Wet Nurse, she still appears on Mergo's Loft even after killing her in Pthumeru Ihyll.

Once again I summoned Queen Killer, obviously he lived his whole life for a opportunity to face this queen do who was I to deny him. That NPC summons is a true bro and he achieved his destiny at long last.

This boss is not difficult by any means once you understand how the stun works.
She is kind of a lore-hint-easter-egg-weird-ass-creepy reward of a boss for grinding the chalice dungeons.
Honestly, I don't think it's that interesting of a lore hint. If anything, it makes me think they had a completely different intentiion with her and then decided to just throw her at the end of the chalice dungeons because they gave up on their original idea.
Overall, I think the chalice dungeons should have been integrated to the rest of the game smoothly and be less grindy. Also, if you (like myself) do the chalice dungeons as soon as they are available, then you get so many blood echoes that it trivialise the rest of the game. Pretty weird design coming from FS here. I wonder if Sony had anything to do with the implementation of chalice dungeons.

In any case, if you need to kill her, just use a tricked weapon that can be wielded with 2 hands and do a jump R2 on her then fallback to avoid the stun. Rinse and repeat ad-nauseum.

Please add a note that you need the Living String from slaying the Brain of Mensis to do the Ritual. It's very easy to miss the elevator down and didn't think I needed to bother as there is no achievement for it. So now that I have progressed into NG+ it's gonna take me a while to get there again. There is basically every step EXCEPT this one that is locked behind a bunch of main story bosses.

          • Anonymous

I don't know if this is a bug or if it's intentional, but I got the achievement for killing her by attacking her right before Wet Nurse

            • Anonymous

I really wonder why they made this particular boss fight.

Did they want to include her in the main game, but ran out of time/resources?
Did they just need an extra boss fight, and already had the character modeled?
Or was this, the chalice dungeon finale, always the intended role for Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen?

Do I feel bad for killing a handcuffed, pregnant woman? **** yeah, I'm depressed. But the I suddenly remembered my hatred for ALL of the phtumerian dungeons (especially the defiled one) and came to the conclusion that getting the platinum and saving my sanity were MUCH more important than my morality.

                • Anonymous

As one can clearly see, at the moment of the fight she is still pregnant. So I took my HMS and dealt plenty of untransformed R2 attacks. That's how Moon Presence was born.

Hit-and-run with a primed boomhammer worked surprisingly well. Was able to get a charged R2 in at openings. Pistol made quick work of the clones. After struggling (badly!) through Orphan, Laurence, Loran Darkbeast, defiled Watchdog, and defiled Amygdala, I surprised myself by defeating the Queen on the first try.

Actually I enjoyed fighting her, I think she was a good boss and her gimmicks were fun to play around. Now was this boss fight worth beating 5 chalices to access? **** no 1-2 are sleep simulators 3rd I forgot what even had inside it because of how cancerous 4th was and by the time I was in 5th I just speedruned to her so I could finally get the achievement.

                      • Anonymous

It'd be a cool fight it wasn't for the fact that you're ridiculously overpowered from having to slog through every chalice dungeon in the game

                        • Anonymous

Do you need the impurity rune to summon queen killer? I had the Hunter one on and the only hunter summons i saw in layer 3 were the madman and olek.

What an annoying obnoxious boss and quite pathetic compared the to **** the game makes us go through. She’s not even hard just gimmicky. 3/10 for me

The part about the transformed Threaded Cane not causing the baby to cry is not true. I have to admit that the baby cried less, but sometimes, even if I got to approach her without the baby crying, the started chain-locking her with whip slashes, the baby started crying even if I did not stop attacking. I have stamina for about 9 hits and I can confirm 100% that the baby can start crying right in the middle of the hits even if I mash R1.

                              • If you're going for the trophy, you can skip straight to the final chalice dungeon by making chalice 3aqbyx95. After 4 chalice dungeons and being bored out of my skull... this find was a god send.

Bruh, that was easy AF. LOL Run up with my saw Spear in long form, heavy attack shoot her in face and do my critical hit attack. Throw knives at Clones rinse and repeat what my first attack pattern. Run heavy with saw spear cancels nearly all her attacks too. None of your strategies were required. I had poison runes on though but she hit me like twice with her poison spear shots so it didn't even matter if she did.

Holy Moonlight Sword transformed L2 pancakes this boss and completely trivializes this fight. Watch out for baby cry but rinse and repeat..

Spent more time getting to this melanin-free, regal wifu than I did playing the entirety of the rest of the game.

This was the easiest one shot fight lmao after doing the dungeons and having a very hard time with watchdog of the old lords, i came in and completely aggro attacked her non stop to death

Augur spam CC locked her next to a corner, clipped through the wall and fell off during phase changing chain rip anim. Done and done

My take on the lore with Yharnam is that she still-birthed Mergo, but being the child of a Great One (Yharnam is not a Great One herself, so the implication would be that the father is the Great One), my guess being Formless Oeden, existing only in Voice, not body. At some point Micolash and the Wet Nurse conspired to usurp the powers of a Great One through the stillborn Mergo, using the Umbilical Cord that the Wet Nurse had on her. Unfortunately for everyone present in the School of Mensis, their brains "overloaded", essentially ending their physical lives but existing on higher planes because of the liason between the Nurse and Micolash. I also think that the Phtumeru Ihyll Chalice comes before the Wet Nurse, given that Yharnam is still pregnant at the time of her boss battle. Having ended her physical form yourself, you discover that Mergo's physical body was long dead. Since you carry the Lithopedion with you, her conscience is still existent, having seen your will to end this Nightmare Cycle, she awaits the death of the Wet Nurse and Micolash, who have caused Mergo's ascendant self no end of torment by trying to kill it. My guess is The One Reborn is supposed to be Mergo's physical form after the stillbirth, which began the torment of Mergo and Yharnam

Weird boss, a few ppl told me shes like superboss of bloodborne when i asked about get when i encountered her in mergos loft. Was hyped to fight her, turns out shes 4th easiest boss for me (after witch, mergo and micolash) ... defeated on first try with blades of mercy, spammed r1 whole fight and she couldnt even resist that, don't know why theres gold trophy for this ...

                                              • Anonymous

You can spam Augur of Ebriatas and chain vicerals that way. I'm not sure if that's been mentioned yet but it works wonders. You can just stand behind her and it will interrupt her teleporting but I'm not sure about other big attacks and such.

                                                • Anonymous

Only in bloodborne do you use dead babies to reach a pregnant woman using her peiod blood as a weapon, and killing her to take her special dead baby

                                                  • Anonymous

Very good boss design imo, had a lot of fun fighting her. Aesthetics are cool, her moveset is good, music whips. Probably very easy if you can hit her from a good distance but a decent challenge if you need to get up close

                                                    • Anonymous

I clear these dungeons every time I play Bloodborne specifically for the Blood Rock. Queen has always dropped Blood Rock. This time I get 2 Chunks. All that and it's not even a guaranteed drop. Shame

                                                      • Anonymous

I recommend summoning Queen Killer for the fight (if he is available). Queen Killer can stop Yharnam's more damaging AOE's with a single cannon shot. This will be your chance to rush. When you get to her, Queen Killer will usually follow, and the two of you can stun lock her until the second phase.

For the second phase, look for the Queen with the bloodiest gown. This will be the real queen. Attack her while Queen Killer deals with the clones. Repeat until death.

                                                        • Anonymous

Finally did it! Third try lol
Queen Killer helped me take 3/4 of the boss health, then i finished the job with the transformed Beast Cutter, using the R2 attacks.

                                                          • Anonymous

I was surprised at how easy she was for me personally, after this long and somewhat exhausting journey through the chalice dungeons. I struggled the most with the Watchdog and Amygdala in Defiled, getting oneshot at full health several times, but killed the Queen on my first try. Her moves were very easy to predict and avoid in my opinion, and with the transformed R2 of the Beast Cutter I could often interrupt her close range attacks.

Sage Hair can be purchased from Bath messengers in NG+

I beat her first try, after struggling for hours with Defiled Amygdala and even the bloodletting beast. Pretty anticlimactic but glad to be done.

+10 Saw Cleaver made it easy with 50 str/50 skill.
I could get in 3 hits before retreating without being stunlocked.
Sprint up to a clone, hit it once with R1, then head for the Queen. Easy to find her as she always had the blood red sword.
Finished her off with Evelyn once she got close - the bowblade would also work very well.

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

It’s challenging with how lengthy it is and the attacks are very unique paired with my favourite soundtrack in the game. The chalices are a tiresome journey and I always feel great when I reach this boss at the end of it all.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

For anyone struggling i summoned the Queen killer as i figured the name fit this fight and went in through the first stage going hit and run style. Then during second stage she focused on the summon and turned her back to me and i was then able to chain repeated backstabs that she could not escape(i think she was repeatedly trying to summon her clones) and the fight ended with the chain. I did this with simons bowblade so i imagine anything with a charge of similar or faster attack will produce the same result hope it helps

                                                                              • Anonymous

It was such a surprise to win this way, but I'd had prefered to do it normally xD

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

If your lvl is high and strength build you can kind of brute force through her with a +10 ludwig holy blade untransformed R1, she's really easy to dodge when she shoots projectiles but the spear is kind of annoying, just hit her 2-3 hits and dodge away then rinse and repeat. You can shoot the fake one 1 time to make them disappear. I finally have the platinum at lvl 178 and solo only since I don't have PS plus. ='((((

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Would have tried soloing, but was sick to death of the whole thing after the previous boss, the bloodletting beast.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Decided to overlevel just to get my plat. Needless to say she went down faster than she should have under a LHB nuke-slam barrage

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Getting to her is so damn hard. The defiled chalice is probably the hardest part in any fromsoft game because you have half health and have to fight Watchdogs and his horrible hitboxes and Amygdala with its massive health pool and ridiculously damaging attacks

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Get the Pthumeru Chalice, do the dungeon 2. Open the Pthumeru Root Chalice, look for a chalice with the glyph "3aqbyx95", it will be pretty much at the bottom of the list 3. Fight your way down to the third layer, it's tough but possible (especially with summons), Yharnam will be at the third layer Killing her this way does award you the achievement as well as all other rewards, as usual. A strategy I found useful was to let the "Queen Killer" summon deal high damage to her, and healing him with the Choir Bell. Good hunting!

                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

She isn't the hardest, but then again, in my opinion, she's the only one that's well-designed. No janky hitboxes, no unclear aoe, no absurd amounts of tracking on her attacks. Also, her gimmick's enjoyable and it's touching as well as unsettling to see dead Mergo still protect his mother. Much more memorable experience than the rest, who often have little reason to be there or be given the importance of a boss fight in the first place.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

The L2 of the burial blade can avoid the baby cry if you do it at the maximum possible distance. Actually the real prize for this fight is the golden trophy:another step to the platinum :D

Took me at least 20 hours in the dungeons to get here, just to kill her on my first attempt by spamming R1 with kirkhammer sword. On the other hand it's a relief to finally get this achievement - hurray :)

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

If you tilt the camera down where Queen Yharnam is in Mergo's Loft, you can see that the way her dress fans out at the bottom looks unmistakably like a sea shell. Sea shell imagery is highly prominent in Bloodborne, and there's even a relief of a woman standing on a shell in Cainhurst. Plus there's the connection to the Fishing Hamlet and the ocean and Kos, but that's a little too much to discuss right now...

                                                                                                                  • Shame that her outfit and weapon aren't playable. If they had been, I'd imagine her weapon would behave similar to the Chikage in terms of element but behave like the Holy Moonlight Sword in terms of transformation. As for the attire, it would likely have had high blood resistance but low frenzy resistance (she does go berserk in the fight). Just saying from a Fashion Souls standpoint, Bloodborne really could've used more armors to choose from.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Then do a visceral attack and while she tries to get up backstab her again and do a visceral attack again. Repeat this until she dies. (I am not sure about it but i think you can do this with any weapon that has long backstab range).

The one clone left standing didn't even bother and decided to chill on the other side of the rotunda.

Like the others go on the tombstones, but they are all full from the other dungeons except the one for a short chalice... does the final chalice go on that tomb or am I missing something.
