Moon Phases are world states in Bloodborne. Depending on specific events and conditions during the game, the sky will change colors and the inhabitants of the world will react differently. Some quests and secrets have special conditions that must be under a specific phase.
Most consumables sold by the Bath Messengers will increase in blood echo price at the with each progression in Moon Phase.

Old Yharnam, Forbidden Woods and Forsaken Castle Cainhurst still have a white moon during this phase. Defeating Gehrman, the First Hunter and encountering the Moon Presence will bring the Blood Moon to Hunter's Dream. |
AnonymousThis is my umpteenth playthrough. I have reached the second moon phase without beating Vicar Amelia. Haven’t even entered the church. I’ve just been playing Chalice Dungeons after killing blood starved beast, returned to Yarnham and the moon is all orange and Old Hunter Hendryck is waiting at Oedon Chapel, without me having talked to Eileen. I’m confused.

My first play through ever on this. Got a hunters axe +3 thinking of grabbing the Kirk hammer or stake driver soon. Any advice? I’m about to yank blood starved beast with Alfred

I have a theory of the red moon. When it hangs low it's supposed to get rid of humans right? Well... Why didn't it turn Ariana, Adella, the old hag, the nontrusting man, Eileen, the crow of cainhurst, iosefka, Alfred, and the Older Sister? And some of those are outside the chapel.
So, this could be explained by one of three things:
1. The incense prevents that.
Well, most homes have incense and they still won't talk. Probably not likely
2. The chapel protects people from the moon.
Well, iosefka and the Older Sister don't turn. So that also isn't likely.
3. It doesn't effect humans.
I think this is more likely, due to how the red moon doesn't affect the people we save, other hunters, and the Older Sister. And they obviously don't turn to beasts.
So... If the third option is correct, why can't we talk to npcs anymore? (Other than older sister and iosefka) Well... If we think that if the moon doesn't turn people into beasts (or makes the beast effect faster) then either they evacuated the city for fear of the scourge (like in old yharnam) or... They are sleeping. It is night after all, so it could be possible. The morning always comes....

I never really saw anyone make a thread about this, but what happened to the towns people throughout Bloodborne once the Blood Moon phase began? You know how you could knock on someone's door in Yharnam and they tell you to go away or laugh at you for being out on the night of the hunt? Any theories? I had this sick idea of them becoming part of The One Reborn considering it's made of flesh and bones plus the fact there are no signs of them even home.

Evening phase is not triggered by visiting Cathedral Ward for the fist time and anyone can check that easily - just get summoned in Cathedral Ward to help other player with Amelia - the sky is always in afternoon phase. I'm not sure if I've even had evening phase, as after defeating Amelia all the Giants in Cathedral Ward area went to sleep (as in night phase).

its nice the whole changing moon phase thing, but if you defeat ROM, the Moon turns RED, but if you revisit the areas like: Forbidden Forest, Old Yharnam, The witches area, even in the Nightmare of Mensis, the MOON IS STILL WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a glitch? a bug? or? somebody forget it to change?

I got to the cathedral ward and it didn't trigger the evening phase. Beating vicar amelia did. I think what triggered the night phase was the blood starved beast. Maybe it's by number of bosses defeated?
If u look at Cathedral Ward from Central Yharnem the Moon or Sun is behind the cathedral, ie (direction 1).. If u go to Cathedral Ward and look, the moon is behind Central Yharnem, ie (direction 2), with (direction 1) behind u. Its obviously the same bridges that connect the two areas (tested with coins on the bridge and looking at them from the ledges in Cathedral). Probably because developers wanted the look and feel to be right. But, after the first phase change the moon is in a whole new position and stays there no matter where u are.

I'm not gonna lie, but after I beat gascoigne a phase increased the textures in my game. I know this sounds stupid but it looks pretty close to the beta graphics.
