Living String is a consumable material Item in Bloodborne.
Living String Usage
- Used in the Great Pthumeru Ihyll Chalice Ritual.
Location
- In Nightmare of Mensis, after defeating Micolash, Host of the Nightmare and using the lever to drop the Brain of Mensis down, it is obtainable by accessing a green cage elevator in the black mannequin enemy area and then slaying the non-aggressive Brain. Upon arriving in the dark area, head immediately northwest after exiting the elevator and it should be there. Listen for the sounds of its breathing.
- Can be purchased in the Hunter's Dream for 10 Insight. The trigger for this item to appear is most likely killing the Brain of Mensis mentioned above. (Can confirm the Yharnam Stone is NOT required to buy the string and Make Contact gesture need not be done) (I killed it in my first play through but was never given the option to buy the living string. My assumption is that the trigger to buy it is first obtaining the string.)
Notes
- Used to open the Great Pthumeru Ihyll Chalice Dungeon where Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen is located.
- There seems to be a bug where killing the Brain of Mensis with a cooperator can cause you to not get the Living String. The bug seems to be caused by the cooperator landing the final attack, reloading the area and killing it again will get you the Living String.

Holy ****ing ****, I just want to be done with the awful chalice dungeons, but I end up having to farm materials for almost every single one - as if defeating defiled watchdog and amygdala wasn't a skillcheck enough, now I have to farm even more ****
I understand that we all do this for the platinum and that it's optional, but did it really need a shitty grind for materials?

This item is a progress lock, basically. You have to continue forward with the main game in order to continue with chalice dungeons at a certain point.

You can get the Moon rune by doing the Make Contact gesture even after killing Mother Brain.

You do not need to kill the brain of mensis to buy the living string in the insight shop.

Is there another way to get the living string? Because I honestly don't want to kill the Brain of Mensis. It just looks so sad and helpless, lying in the dark.... I know it's terrible and evil and all, but there's a certain reverence about it that I don't want to disturb.

There has never been living string in my insight store, I pulled the lever on mother brain several days ago and still didn't have it available. I looked up how to get it, found this wiki, double checked that I have never seen this item in my insight store, then left to go get it. Came back, and it's here in the store. I can 100% confirm that's what makes it appear. I don't know what qualifies making me a credible person and don't know if you guys wanna trust some random person but yeah I just did that and it's true. So there you go.
You can purchase this item BEFORE obtaining the Yharnam Stone, someone please change the entry. This item is purchasable from the insight merchants after having obtained the only one in game from the Mother Frenzy Brain, testing exactly what conditions are required to unlock each material.

In order to reach Yharnam the Queen (Yharnam Stone) you have to kill The Mother Brain (Living String). What's the purpose ?
You can buy them in the insight shop ONLY after you've killed the Brain, it wasn't available to me after getting Moon from making contact. I could buy them only after I went back and killed the poor thing.
